batch renaming using awk and bash

This little command will trim the first 27 characters of files in the directory you’re in.

It also assumes that your files are no longer than 99 characters in length.

Adjust to suit.

ls | awk '{print "mv "$1 " " substr($1, 27, 99)}'|sh

If you want to test remove the bit of the command I highlighted in red.

Using SRT subtitle files on Popcorn hour

I was having little trouble getting .SRT file working on Pop corn hour A-110. After some googling, I came across this page:

To enable SRT files support you need the following steps.

1. Make sure the SRT filename and the video name match (Except for the extensions obviously)

2. Make sure they are in the same directory

3. (OPTIONAL STEP) On your popcorn hour go to Setup menu, under subtitles change the language to English (Or any language, but not NONE), this will make sure the subtitles always run when you load a movie in your selected language.

4. Using your remote during playback you can enable the subtitles using the subtitles button.

Pretty simple, isn’t it?

Pictures processing workflow

This blog post is designed as reference/bookmark for myself, but I hope it helps someone too.

I normally sort pictures I have taken every so often, usually when the flash card is full. So they are usually taken over a period of time from different dates/times etc.

So here is my process of handling  these pictures.

1. Copy pictures from the card to an intermediate folder

2. Tag any GPS (Geotagging) info I may have to the pictures (I use GPICSync)

3. Use PhotoMove to sort + move the pictures from the temporary folder to the final resting place of the pictures, sorted by year/month/day.

4. Use Picasa to do basic changes touch-up and to upload pictures.

5. Use photoshop for the heavy duty work.

Any comments on improving that work-stream is welcome.

Toshiba Customer Support sucks

Why do companies make it so difficult to communicate between the customer and the person actually responsible for solving the problem.

This only promotes poor quality and service delivery, as there are so many people in the chain the customer will usually get fed up trying to reach the person and grudgingly accept “That’s all he’s going to get”

Only the most stubborn and persistent of customers can actually puncture and break through and force someone to look at the bigger picture and ignore the badly written procedures and processes that have failed in that instance.

Toshiba has yet to solve my problem, I bought a restore disc for my laptop which doesn’t work. Toshiba claims it’s not their problem as it’s from an external supplier.

Here is news for you, when it says “Toshiba retsore disc” purchased from a website called I expect you (Toshiba) to take full responsibility and not to offload it to some supplier. Again goes back to hiding behind multiple layers of “other people”.

I am disappointed with Toshiba and I am stubborn enough to get this matter sorted out.
